How Do I Get Something Off My Credit Report

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR SOMETHING TO GET OFF YOUR CREDIT?

My father took out a Credit Card in 1986, and then added me on later so that I could use it (he never told me though.)

I checked my Credit Report today and almost had a heart attack when I noticed I had A Credit card open in my name with $15K debt on it. Like I said, I was unaware my dad put my name on it. My own credit card only has a $2K limit on it.

He has paid payments on it and never been late, so there are no delinquencies since he opened it in 1986, however I am applying for a government security clearance, and CANNOT have $15K in Credit Card Debt at 23 years old!

He called the Credit Card Company and had my name removed, so it should come off My Credit Report...but I was wondering how long that takes?

Like I said, I'm under investigation, and I don't know when they'll be doing my financial background check, and don't want it to take a month to have it removed, otherwise I might not get my clearance

Generally creditors send updates to the bureaus as part of the billing cycle process, so it depends on when the next billing date is.

Check after the statement bills. I hope you haven't caused yourself additional trouble. Be prepared to see it still on there as a closed account and be prepared to explain that.
